Companion Animal Surgery

Facilities:

Here at Gorteen Acre Veterinary Clinic we provide a range of surgical procedures designed to keep your pets healthy, prevent future medical problems, and improve quality of life. Your pets safety and comfort are our highest priority from the moment they arrive to the moment they go home.

We provide a sterile, fully equipped operating room with surgical grade lighting and instrumentation. This includes a gas anaesthetic delivery system, active warming, sterilisation facilities for our equipment and our anaesthetic monitoring system which enables our team to monitor your pets vital signs in real time throughout the duration of your pets procedure .

The team may recommend pre-anaesthesia blood testing for your pet. This can be due to age, pre-existing illness, the type of surgery, and a number of other factors. Our team will always keep you informed as to what our recommendations are and why we are making them.

The day of Surgery:
  • In cases of elective procedures such as spays, castrations, or lump removals, we will ask you to fast your pet overnight and drop them in to the clinic between 9am and 9:15am.
  • Your pet will be weighed and given a clinical exam, any pre anaesthetic bloods will be taken at this point if necessary.
  • Your pet will be sedated with medications appropriate to their age, species and the surgery being performed.
  • Once sedated, your pet will be transferred to our prep room where they will have an IV catheter placed. We will administer an IV induction agent and place your pet on gas anaesthetic.
  • Monitoring equipment for heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and respiratory rate will be used throughout the surgery.
  • Once the surgery is completed your pet will be monitored continuously during recovery and until they go home with you.
  • Going home you will receive detailed written home care instructions, including guidance for incision monitoring, as well as instructions for at home pain relief administration. We offer a post operative check 3 and 7 days post surgery.
