Bluetongue Virus

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is investigating the suspicion of bluetongue (BT) at a premises near Bangor in County Down.

There has been a confirmed herd outbreak of Bluetongue Virus (BTV) serotype-3 in Bangor, Co Down. The outbreak affects over 40 cattle to date. There has also been a suspected case of BTV in Greyabbey. No update to this case has been provided by DAERA since Decemeber 6th. Currently a 20km control zone is in place centred on each location of suspect breakdown.

“Midges spread BTV but AFBI has now confirmed we are in the vector low period and this, coupled with ongoing results from our surveillance activities and colder weather, mean that from today, livestock outside of the TCZs can trade with Great Britain. Livestock will also be permitted to move into the current TCZs. Licences are available on the DAERA website.” DAERA 09-12-2025

The movement of susceptible animals from Northern Ireland to Ireland for the purpose of breeding or production is restricted.

Movement of susceptible animals from Northern Ireland to Ireland for the purpose of slaughter is currently permitted in cases where a Veterinary health certificate is supplied.

The minister for Agriculture, Food, and Marine, Martin Hayden, confirmed on Monday December 8th that additional targeted and risk-based surveillence testing has been implemented.

The Department are also in contact with vaccine manufacturers ahead of the high risk period from April-November. They are examining the possibility of introducing a vaccination programme for Bluetongue. Currently vaccination for BTV3 is not currently permitted in Ireland. It is permitted in Northern Ireland and the UK with a specific license. It is also permitted in in other EU countries.
