Pregnancy Care

Proper care during pregnancy helps ensure healthy mothers and babies.

Confirming pregnancy:

  • Dogs: Ultrasound after 25 days or x ray after 45 days to check fetal development and puppy count. Average Pregnancy length is 63 days
  • Cats: Ultrasound after 20 days or X ray after 40 days for kitten count. Average pregnancy length is 65 days

Nutrition

  • Feed a high quality, nutrient rich diet designed for pregnant animals
  • Increase calories in the last trimester
  • Offer small, frequent meals to avoid discomfort. The developing foetus’ take up a lot of space so small meals frequently can help prevent discomfort or nausea

Exercise

  • Moderate activity is encouraged
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, especially late in pregnancy

Health monitoring

  • Schedule regular veterinary check ups
  • Watch for signs of illness such as loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, or unusual discharge

Vaccinations & Parasite control

  • Update vaccines prior to breeding
  • Use only vet approved parasite treatments
  • Discuss a parasite control programme with your vet prior to use

Preparing for birth

  • Provide a quiet, comfortable whelping or nesting area
  • Know labour signs: nesting, restlessness, temperature changes (below 37.8°C indicates labour within 24 hours)

Warning signs

Dogs: Prolonged labour, green/black discharge, or straining without progress. Greater that 30 minute gap between pups.

Cats: Loss of appetite, vomiting or extended labour. Greater than 20 minute gap between kittens.

Contact The vet immediately if complications occur.

Postpartum care

  • Ensure fresh water, quality food, and a quiet environment
  • Monitor babies for nursing, warmth and activity
  • Schedule a postpartum check up with us
