Companion Animal Emergency
Call us immediately if your pet is experiencing any of the following:
Has been in a road traffic accident
Has ingested a toxic, or poisonous substance
Is experiencing seizure like activity
Is having difficulty breathing
Is having difficulty urinating
Is bleeding, particularily from the nose or mouth
Is having difficulty giving birth
Is having excessive vomiting or diarrhoea
How our on call works – triage
We understand that emergencies can happen anytime, and quick action makes all the difference. Here at Gorteen Acre Veterinary Clinic a vet is available after hours for urgent medical needs. We provide guidance over the phone to determine if your pet needs immediate care, monitoring at home or a scheduled visit.
If needed, we meet you at the clinic to begin emergency treatment straight away.
Stablisation and assessment
We will first provide any emergency treatments to stabalise your pet. This may include oxygen therapy, pain relief, sedation, fluid therapy, or administration of emergency medications.
Once your pet is stable, we perform a thorough evaluation to understand the cause of the emergency. This may include blood tests, urinalysis, ultrasound and radiographs.
Based on our findings we will advise you on our recommended treatments. This could include:
- Fluid therapy
- Pain relief
- Antibiotic therapy
- Fracture stabalisation and repair
- Seizure management
- Toxin/Poison ingestion management

In the case that your pet requires more complex care we can refer you to a specialty clinic to ensure they recieve the most advanced care available.
Hospitalisation
Some pets may need to stay with us for monitoring or treatment. Our hospitalisation care includes warm, quiet recovery spaces and regular monitoring of vital signs.
We will give you regular updates on your pets progress and recovery.
